Belly DancersBellydancing or Rak Sharki to use the correct terminology has long been a passion of mine. I have been teaching it, in Australia, for 20 years. It is such a diverse dance in not only its many styles and genres but also in its people, music and traditions. Belly dancers come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and ages. They also wear many different styles of costuming from the popular two piece number to long flowing throbes. There are many myths and misconception around this art form. To name a few. We are strippers and dance topless (this is a popular one on deviant). NO! It is for labour NO! It is for goddess worship NO! We wear a jewel in our navel. NO! We aspire to be sex slaves lounging around in someone's harem. NO! We dance the dance of the seven veils. NO! We just wiggle. Ahhh!!! This one is the worst especially when you have devoted 20 years of your life, with daily practice and commitment so your can excel at what in essence is an extremely high art form.
